Last week we wrote about Shelterme.tv, the organization that celebrates the amazing stories happening between humans and animals. This week we wanted to share the amazing work of Montana based, “Working Dogs for Conservation”.
A group of scientists, doctors, and conservationists came together to create the program that finds shelter dogs with a knack for detection and then trains them to stop the illegal poaching of elephants and rhinos in Africa.
Right now, many of the elephants and rhinos in Africa are killed for their ivory for a mere $100 USD. The ivory is then sent to China and later sold for thousands of dollars for decorative purposes.http://www.rescues2therescue.org/
The government in China is also doing their part to stop poaching as well. They’ve iniated a ban on the sale of Ivory, to be complete by 2017! But due to the underground markets and other illegal economies, these trades will continue. And this is why the work of WD4C is critical.
Can You Identify Good Detection Dogs?
You can help them find more detection dogs, it’s easy! They need more dogs! They’re not able to get into every single shelter to identify the dogs who would be excellent candidates, so they would appreciate your help in just identifying which dogs would make the cut!
WD4C will adopt and train the dogs who live out the working part of their lives in Africa working to help save the endangered. And when it’s time to retire, they fly back to the USA to live on a beautiful plot of land with an amazing group of people! How awesome is that? And how wonderful would it be if you could be the next person to identify the next dog who saves wildlife? Awesome!
