I just spent the last week in Texas, visiting with family and friends. And an interesting idea popped into my head after a conversation with my former college roommate and a visit with my dad. My dad lives in a great group home, and he’s surrounded by three perfect dogs! When my roommate asked how he was doing, I skipped right to the dogs and how my dad enjoyed them. She then shared with me that some senior care homes are now merging with pre-schools where the two age groups create a harmonious experience. What a concept, right? Well, I thought it was pretty splendid, and then I wondered about the power and impact of compassionate dogs and seniors. Just take a look at this video and let me know if you can figure out where I am going…
According to the CDC, there are 1.4 million people in Nursing/Senior Care homes in the United States. And roughly 15,000 Senior care homes nation-wide. According to the ASPCA, the variable figures are as follows: of the dogs entering shelters, approximately 35% are adopted, 31% are euthanized and 26% of dogs who came in as strays are returned to their owner. The ASPCA suggests that there are 1.2 million dogs that could be spared from being euthanized if they had homes. What if they were able to enter into a nursing home? It’s a lofty idea, I know – there’s a lot to figure out – but I do think it is an idea worth considering. Can the merger of toddlers and seniors be an example of the benefits gained on both sides? A new life for a shelter dog with and a new companion from our nation’s seniors? It sounds like a win-win situation to me!
Tell us if you know where this is definitely happening anywhere on the planet, we would love to know!
